The other day I was lucky enough to find out I had been featured on not ONE but TWO blogs. Can you believe it?

Firstly, Adeline posted my photographic diaries entry. This was my self portrait.

You can read my little message about why I take photos and see my other photos here. It was great fun and the whole project actually got me thinking about why I take photos.

Then later on in the day I was checking out blogs and stumbled upon an entry on aucklandstreetstyle. Hey presto! It was me and my gal pal Amy.

It wasn't actually that much of a surprise as I knew it was going to be posted at some point. But I was surprised at how unflattering I look! When the photo was taken I thought I looked alright but this, well lets just say I don't look that lady like. And poor Amy has her eyes closed! Hmmm, models we are not.

I am actually in Australia right now. Cool huh? I sneakily scheduled this post so that my blog wouldn't go neglected for too long.

When I get back I'll be sure to post photos and highlights from my trip.

Being quite the vain young lady, it is not often that I post photos of myself which I deem to be rather unflattering. However, these are the exception.

I received these razzle dazzle glasses in a parcel from Adeline a few weeks ago and it wasn't until today that I found the time to take some playful photos. Only problem is - you cant actually see out of them - which makes taking self portraits 10 times harder!

Here's hoping posting these photos will be the first step towards me getting over myself and realizing that looking a little trashy is okay...

I am unsure of where this quote originally came from as I stumbled across it on a website many moons ago and did not bother to record where I found it. A Library to Scale.

If you love lists, archives, newspapers, wallpaper and libraries then you are going to love this.

A Library to Scale is a collection of photographs by Ann Shelton. Her subject matter: the most amazing collection of books held in the archives at my place of work. I present to you the Fred Butler collection.

What is it? An immense library of appropriated novels. Covering each book's original illustrated front cover is a protective cover of ornate wallpaper. The words which originally graced the pages inside each book are now covered over by newspaper classifieds. In particular the births, deaths and marriages from the Taranaki Daily News.

Isn't it great? I'm not the best with words so I will leave it at that but you can read more about Fred's life and his collection here.

A pretty little lady came to stay with me over Christmas and new year. Her name is Ada and you can read all about her here.

We went camping at the beach, read books at the library, wrapped presents and walked through the park. Ada was most impressed with my collection of thermos flasks too.

Have you read the latest Frankie Magazine yet? I only just got mine today and have just had a quick flick through. But that was all it took for me to discover one of the greatest set of photographs I have seen in a long while. I am talking about Dave Mead's set of photographs 'Magnificent Specimens'. Of course I havent actually had time to read the article yet (just a quick flick) but what I can deduce is this guy went to Anchorage for the World Beard and Moustache Championships and took photos of the finest specimens (who had travelled from all over the world) the event had to offer.

Did you know I used to have a great collection of sunglasses? Now I only have one pair. Over the years I have sold pairs, lost pairs, broken pairs and put who knows where pairs. In other words I am looking for a new pair of sunglasses.

I have a limited budget and this season I have decided that a more rounded style (as opposed to the square wayfarer look) is the style for me. This is what I've found so far.

Ahhh summer rolled around so fast this year.

Now I've said it before, i'm saying it now and I'll undoubtedly say it again -

SORRY FOR BEING SUCH A SLACK BLOGGER LATELY.

What I am about to say is no excuse BUT - I am super busy right now.

Christmas is just around the corner so I have been frantically trying to think up gifts to give and food to create. The end of the year is creeping up on me and there are things that I feel need to be done before the 31st of December drifts on by.

Plus the summer sun means that the last thing I want to do is sit inside and blog when I could be outside dying of heat exhaustion...

Anyway I'm going to forget about what I haven't done with this blog and look forward to what I will be doing this festive season.

What is your name? My name is Barbara, but some people just call me Barb, Barbie or B. I'm OK with that!
What is your blog? Where can we find it? Well my blog is called "hello, i'm nice" . You see, I was feeling pretty creative. At first it was "the personal photo journal of Barbara" but that was too boring so I decided to change the claim. And to be more professional I thought it would be great to buy the domain, so you can find it at http://www.helloimnice.com/
And roughly how old are you? I'm 24!! I was born the 6/6/86 .... how scary is that?!
Where do you call home? Can you tell me once nice thing about this place? I call home Madrid, it is a beautiful city. There's always something to do, and the best thing is the wonderful weather. I really love the fact it's sunny almost everyday, which really makes me happy.

What is your daily routine? Do you craft all day? Have a 9-5? etc etc. Right now I'm studying a MBA so my daily life is pretty stressing. I wake up very early, take a shower and rush to school. Classes start at 9 and finish at 8 in the afternoon since we stop two hours to eat (something I find really stupid, what's the point of that? if I was at home I would have a nap but obviously you can't do that at school). Then I arrive home and I'm so tired the only thing I want to do is have dinner and go to bed. I'm like a baby right now and get to bed at 10pm. So as you can imagine I only take pics during the weekend since I still don't dare to take my camera with me to class. People still don't know the kind of freak I am. During weekends it's different. I try to get out and take pics as much as I can. I have been using my film camera a lot lately but I'm too lazy to scan all the negatives so they are waiting on my desk feeling quite miserable I don't pay any attention to them.

Who do you live with? Do you have any pets? I'm living with my parents, my brother and my frenchie. He's the cutest thing on earth (well, I guess everyone says that about their boyfriend/girlfriend or pet in case of not having one of the previous ones) He's seven years old and he's my baby.

Favourite season? Why is this? My favourite season is spring because of the nice weather, beautiful flowers and nice temperatures.

Favourtie colour? Why is this? I think my favourite color is brown. I don't know the reason in fact. I tend to dress in that color and I think it is very flattering. At least for me as I'm so pale. Also because I find it kinda retro. I'm very retro lately. I guess that could be a good reason. Brown is quite retro, you see.
Favourite sound? That's a quite interesting question. I guess my favourite sound is the rain pouring outside when I'm in bed wearing my hello kitty pj's (and yes, I gotta be in bed and wearing the pj's)
Favourite taste? If I had to choose a taste that would be chocolate ( yes, I already know that's nothing awesome. maybe you expected something like, don't know, lemon? - sometimes i'm plain as that )
Favourite thing to do on a day off? My favourite thing to do is hang out with my girlfriends in any café and share gossips. Like Sex and the City but in a much-more-madrid-style. I also enjoy roadtrips a lot, so if the weather is nice and we are feeling in the mood we may take the car and drive out of the city to explore a little bit.

What would you describe as your signature style? Well I would define it as "an-old-granny-born-on-the-wrong-decade-kind-of-style" I love blouses, high waist skirts, dresses, tights, cardigans and scarfs. I won't wear jeans usually unless it's strictly necessary.

Do you have any hidden talents? i.e. are you a ballerina? Can you play the trombone? etc etc Well I' don't know if this counts as a special talent, but I can find spots easily when trying to park. I guess I'm a very lucky girl.
Do you have any tattoos? If not, have you ever considered it? I don't have any tattoos, and have never considered about having one. Nothing against, but they are just not my style.
What do you want for christmas? Right now the only thing I want is having a relaxing break, with little homework and lots of plans. Being more greedy I'd say I'd love a 50mm f/1.2 . That would be amazing. So if you are feeling generous, please, email me asap - I will love you forever.

Oh I will share a few things with you which I hope you will enjoy. I'm currently obsessed with Hilda and her beautiful blog.

Talking about make up I want to share with you my fav products. For eyeliner I like the fluidline by MAC. It can be a little bit difficult at first but it lasts all day long and won't even move a bit. The best mascara I have ever tried is Cil Arquitecte by L'Oreal. Amazing lashes. Talking about concealers I have tried a thousand of them and I have found out that Erase Paste by Benefit is just AMAZING. And you should also try Mineralize powder for a natural daily look. This is just a perfect combo. My fav lipstick shade is Ruby Woo by MAC. That red is just so pretty!!
The Lomography redscale film is just incredible. You must try that film. You'll love it.

lightning changed my life

So as I promised earlier, here is the newest edition to my wardrobe. The Struck by Lightning tunic comes courtesy of Ruche and I love it.

The spring air made me yearn for picnics and buttercups so what better way to showcase this tunic then with a little frolic in the meadow just a short drive from where I live. It is so lovely there. Not only does it have copius amouts of meadow space to run and leap but it sits on the bank of a lovely bubbling stream. My sister and I couldn't resist taking our shoes off and dipping our feet in.

The top itself is incredibly versatile. So far I've paired it with a black laced a-line skirt to work and with these jeans for a more casual day wear look. I've also worn it with highwaisted denim shorts but my legs are so white at the moment I thought I better leave that look in the privacy of my own home. The tiny wee lightning pattern is ever so sweet but what I love most is the lovely shiny black buttons down the front.

Just so you know - I NEVER wear trousers. EVER. I'm strictly a skirt and dress kinda girl. But this tunic looked so good with these jeans slightly turned up at the cuff that I had to wear them. Hence, lightning changed my life.

Last sunday some friends and I went for a little stroll around the Craftbomb markets in Grey Lynn, Auckland. The hall was full to bursting with wonderfully talented folk.

I got myself a dainty little screen printed fabric brooch from the lovely Ferrit. I do urge you to check out her blog to see what mischievous things she is up to.

I also bought a set of four beautifully illustrated cards.

These come from the lovely couple Gem and Nathan from Hunter Gatherer. This husband and wife duo make and sell the most delightful pieces of crafty goodness. They had these wonderful necklaces made from illustrations from Black Beauty and Treasure Island which I really wanted to get as well but unfortunately my budget didn't stretch that far. Check out their sweet little blog for more crafty loveliness.

I've been away

Now that I have a full time job life has got so so hectic. I spend most of my time in the office working for someone else that I barely have a moment to spend on my own. When I am not at work I am at the gym and then I come home and spend the last of my day in the sun.

However, I DO have plans for posts in the following weeks. I got a lovely parcel from shop ruche last week. Will be showing you what was in it as soon as can be. I also have November's talk to me tuesday to post too. So keep coming back!

I shall leave you with a picture of my weekend. We went for a bike ride to my brother's school and played on the swing! It feels so nice that summer is on its way.

Here it is! Talk to me Tuesday is back in all its glory. Now that I am in full time work I think this will be a great way to keep the little monarch blog alive and it is also a great way to learn more about other brilliant bloggers out there in the old blogosphere. I am so happy to have rekindled the flames.

My first interviewee for the newest season of Little Monarch's Talk to me Tuesday is Carly from a girl and her blog. She is the bees knees.

1. Firstly, whats your name. Carly!

2. And roughly how old are you? 21 years old.

3. Colour of your hair? light brownish/blondish.

4. And your eyes? green.

5. What about your favourite colour? I have tons but my absolute is deep purple. i adore earthy browns and greens too.

6. Favourite food? Shahi korma from a local Indian vegetarian restaurant. it is to DIE for.

7. Ok enough of these one word answers. What is the name of your blog and what inspired you to start it? What do you blog about? Originally started to keep in touch with friends that were going away from the summer and it became so much more than that. My random musings of a university student, which range from anything from what i did over the weekend, photos I’ve taken, what art has caught my eye to seeking out sweet deals. Read Carly's blog here.

8. How would you describe your personal style? Thrifty chic because most if not all come from a thrift store or the bargain bin which is amazing.

9. If you were thrifting what do you usually gravitate to first? i.e. home ware, dresses, shoes, jewellery etc. It’s a tie between crafty supplies and dresses. I’m always on the look out for vintage craft supplies and quite often i find some really brilliant needlepoint kits. And for dresses... it’s always interesting to see what kind of dresses are on the plus size rack (if the store even has one, jerks). Usually they are hideous, floor length, stretchy black numbers. Weren’t there any fashionable plus size ladies in the past. Once in a while i walk away with a real find.

10. So where abouts do you live? Who do you live with? What's something wonderful about this place you would like to share with us? I live in Hamilton, Ontario. with my family. I love Hamilton. The local community is really tight-knit and friendly. I’ve made a lot of friends over the past couple of years and they are the best. There’s a great local art and music scene here too. i love the house that we live in. It was my Gramma’s house, we moved in after she passed away. It’s comforting to live in a house that has so many lovely memories.

11. Are you a sweet or savoury kinda girl? Savoury. Yet sweets are my downfall.

12. Country or city girl? A little bit of both. I love the city. But I also love and long for the peaceful outdoors.

13. Do you have any pets? Unfortunately, no. BUT I LOVE CATS.

14. Anything else you would like to share? a favourite blog, website, shop or recipe?

modcloth update

Just an update about my little saga with modcloth which you can read here.

After I published the post mentioned above I got two comments from modcloth employees telling me they were sorry for the mistake and that I still was infact an affiliate and there must have been some kind of mix up. They said they would email me with a new invitation.

Well that was last Monday and that email still hasn't arrived. Interesting. I thought about emailing them asking when it would arrive but my previous attempt at emailing them went unanswered so I don't hold out much luck.

I've got a surprise for tomorrow's post.

is it okay to have hair here?

How beautiful are these photographs.Fashionable women with hair in places where society tells us women shouldn't have hair? I love these photos so much. It was hard to pick my faves.

In the end I chose the ones with the sweet clothes. There was one image of a girl in a bikini who hadn't had a bikini wax. I ummed and ahhhed about including it because I personally really like it and I don't really see the problem with an image of a woman in a bikini but in the end I didn't include it as I didn't want to offend anyone. Does this make me a hypocrite?

Spring has sprung

The weather is warming up but the rain is still coming down. It must be spring! I have a real soft spot for spring and autumn as they are the mild months in between the harshness of winter and summer. I can still get away with wearing light cardigans and leggings but I can wear lighter more floaty dress and I can even start thinking about wearing sandals. As I said in earlier posts I had a spring outfit planned and this is it. I'm still wearing tights and a cardigan but I think the platforms and grassy green gingham really welcome in the spring air.

I had a great day at the hopspice last week as well. I scored myself these wonderful trays for a dollar and my wonderful scarf for 50cents.

Oh and today I had my first day at my new job. First days are always strange and I'm sure it will be much of the same for the first week until I've got my head around things. I hope this blog wont suffer too much and I shall still try to post regularly and keep reading everyone elses lovely blogs too.

modcloth what have you done

So as I said in this earlier post I signed up and got accepted to the modcloth affiliate program. I thought this was great and I even managed to get modcloth a sale from it.

But then the unthinkable happened - as quickly as I received my acceptance email it was cruelly snapped away from me.

For some reason Modcloth decided to terminate their affiliation with me. It would have been nice if they had just not accepted my request in the first place, no?

I am still bitterly disappointed at this especially since I have posted their ad on my blog and got them a shoe sale. I wrote them an email about a week ago but have not had any reply.

I think I am going to have to boycott them and just when I had got a job and have been looking at pieces to buy with my next pay cheque. Modcloth you have gone down in my books.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Sorry for the rant, I don't think I've ever had such a ranty post before but I am just so peeved about this. Modcloth - for shame.

I'm not really sure about anything.

Alexa Chung is a bit of a babe though and she always wears the sweetest of clothes. She also really reminds me of a friend of mine who has been living in Bahrain for the past few years but is returning to New Zealand soon. Just like Alexa Chung she is pretty and stylish. Plus she doesn't even realise it. I know every girl and her pug blogs about Miss Chung at some point. oh well.

I'm pretty lazy at the moment and I can't be bothered to take pictures of my spring outfit that I've had planned. Soon I promise. Oh, I got a new job! I'm working at the local museum as an image technician. I get my own desk and I get to catalogue a collection of old archaeological photographs. I start on Monday.

Painting the fence, painting my life

My life has been full of updates over the past few days. Firstly, I updated my blog. I was really in love with my old classic blogger format and I was very reluctant to change but I thought this newer fresher layout was a good decision and a good way to welcome in the fresh spring months which are lurking just around the corner. The second update in my life was painting the fence! My father, sister and I all threw on these sexy overalls, grabbed a paintbrush and gave our wooden fence a lovely makeover. It looks great. So do the overalls.

Whenever photos don't come out how I want them I always go over to picnik and play around with them. For this shoot I didn't really like any of the photos but thought they turned out quite cool with the holga application. If you have a spare moment and loads of photos to edit I do suggest you have a go with Picnik. It is all free and so easy to use.

A little while ago I joined a parcel swapping group The Snail and the Pigeon. I sent away my first gift, which was themed By the Seaside, a week ago and just today I sent off my next gift which was loosely based around the theme of Icecream. It's going to England - I hope my recipient likes it. I am still waiting for my first parcel to arrive and I cant wait! Sending and receiving is so much fun. Don't you think?

I was in a bit of a childish mood the other day and what better way to release this energy than to dress up in a playful dress and read Tove Jansson. This whole outfit reminds me a little bit of a Russian doll or a Croatian dancer.

Each time I go to take outfit posts I realise how much I need that tripod! leaning a camera on a rock just isn't the same! and my camera is taking a bit of a beating too as the wind always seems to knock it over. A sweet SLR wouldn't go astray either. Somethings for the Christmas wish list?

I went away last week to a lodge on the mountain with no internet access and no television. I was having withdrawals but luckily I took along a camera so I could take some outfit posts in a bit of an exotic location. It was really, really hard to steady the camera on such rocky surfaces and I now realise I need to get myself a tripod. It would make blogging so much easier.

The first day there was actually no snow around the lodge but the terrain reminded me so much of Iceland and since there was no skiing it was an optimal time for getting out the trusty snapper.

On the third day it snowed but because we spent most of our time on the slopes there was little time for mucking about. This was the best of the lot.

What a Stella day

Gosh its been quite some time since I last posted. The internet here is suuuuuuper slow. I've just got back from a long weekend in Auckland and I bought some delightful treasures which I shall share with you soon. Today I was busy in the kitchen. I made a bolognase sauce for dinner and lamingtons for dessert.

This afternoon i treated myself to the new Stella Artois Legere, A premium low carbohydrate beer, whilst I took some snaps.

thats it, im officially hooked. I desperately want another tattoo. I've been creeping around the internet looking at beautiful tattoos and getting envious about those who are covered in so many lovely designs.

Originally I wanted to get a fantail on my left arm to go with my little monarch sparrow.

BUT according to Maori myth if a fantail flies into your home you should expect a death. I shouldnt let this put me off but I think I have. i've decided instead to get a little green waxeye done because they are native to NZ (and australia i think...), are similar to a sparrow, and it was the first bird i saw close up when I returned to NZ from the UK.

AS I said in my previous post, last weekend was my baking weekend and I was actually rather pleased with myself. Usually when I bake I cant help but alter the recipe slightly and the results are less than desirable. But this time I stuck to the recipe and followed it religiously. The result: Some rather fine looking red velvet cupcakes which I took round to Liza's to have with tea and scones. Not a bad Saturday in New Plymouth after all.

This weekend I've been perfecting my red velvet cupcakes. So far the best recipe I have found is from The Hummingbird Bakery cookbook. If you want to try your hand at baking these delicious cakes click here

Any who, the main reason I am posting about my baking is to share this sweet little downloadable paper doll template . These gorgeous little dolls can be personalised with scrap fabric or simply colouring pens and pencils. I used them as my cupcake toppers but the opportunities are endless...christmas tree decorations, labels, activities for children...im thinking of making a stop motion film with mine!

Everyone. Little Monarch is now safe and sound in her home land New Zealand. Aotearoa. Land of the long white cloud. It feels strange but I know I'll settle in quickly. Life is slower here and I miss my friends back in London. But hey, new life, new adventures.

I suspect I am going to be spending a lot of my time on the internet over the next few weeks so hopefully my blog will get the much needed attention it deserves.

Storm in a tea cup

Ever since I got Little Monarch tattooed on my forearm I've been thinking about getting more and more. My other arm is strictly reserved for a fantail holding a sceptre but I've been contemplating the idea of getting a tea cup tattooed either on my inner ankle or back of my neck. I did a little bit of a search for some inspiration.

These little birdies are too sweet. The more I think about it the more I want something like this.

Here are some actual tea cup tattoos. Im not really fond of any of these but it helps me define what I do want.

What do you think? any of them really stand out to you? Of course I will get my tattoo artist to draw them herself as I think thats a much better way then taking in an image already drawn up but this is a good starting point.

p.s. im writing this at JFK airport. I've been sitting here for 5 hours now as my flight was overbooked and they put me on another one. i am a little tired.

Where have I been!

Away with the fairies!

I havent been in the blogging mood lately as I am busy trying to pack up my London life and move back to NZ. I hope to be back on here soon though.

I have bad news. I was supposed to be doing a month of travelling through the USA but unfortunately I have run out of money and can no longer afford it. This means I wont be able to meet up with a lot of your faces. I am very sad about this.

However I am going to be in LA on the 25th of June so if anyone wants to meet me then that would be great!

Stripe Day

Taking photos of stripes whilst going about my daily business was harder than I thought. I had to be a bit creative with my definition of stripes...

9am. I put on my striped socks which gave me the inspiration for this post.

10.30am. I wait at South Kensington to catch a tube to Parsons Green. The wall by my seat had stripes!

1pm. I meet Sarah and Katy for a delicious latte and a cupcake and what do you know?! Our cups have stripes!

1.45pm. I go to Katy's. They have a piano. Does this count as stripes?

They also have striped cushions which i snuggle up to whilst watching Roman Holiday.

4pm. I walk through Watney Market on my way to pick up my cousin from nursery. Stripes aplenty at the fruit stalls.

4.30pm. Stripes on the road as we walk home from nursery

5pm. Stripes on the George Tavern

6.20pm. Stripes on Edisons t-shirt as we get ready for dinner!

I am thinking my next post is going to have to be on birds. I have been seeing so many birds around lately!

Following Maria's lead I decided to post my own day in photos post. So much fun!

I woke up.

I got dressed.

I brushed my teeth.

I sat down and finished 2 new hair clips (which will be going in the shop soon!)

then I smiled uncontrollably at the 2 balls of fur sleeping on my bed.

I left the house and bought some fruit from Tesco.

then sat in the park and ate lunch.

I took a moment to admire the kind of view that only a London park can give.

I started a new book.

then walked past these cute houses on my way home.

Before arriving back at my front door.

Bristol, Be My Baby

I had a lovely long weekend in Bristol.

It started with a train ride on the Metropolitan Line which has the best upholstery on the entire London Underground.

Once in Bristol I got to experience inner city camping. We woke up to a beautiful morning with sun, sultana bran and a cup of tea.

I am very proud of what I have achieved today. Ever since I lost my job in January I have been floating around not really doing much. The last two weeks have been especially bad and I have been retreating to old bad habits to help me pass the hours in the day. Not today.

A couple of weekends ago I was involved in the first month of market days for 2010 run by the lovely Jessica Widdows from Of Cabbages and Kings. Although I didn't sell as much as I would have liked, I still had a wonderful weekend and it was great to see what other British crafters were doing too.

Unfortunately I forgot my camera so I didn't get any snaps but I did manage to take a few at the Ballad of Presents...The Village fete which I also attended. Again not as many customers as I would have liked, but I have to start somewhere right?!

Sorry. I went away for awhile. I don't have any real reason for going away, apart from the minor issue of not really feeling passionate about blogging. I think that has passed though as I am very excited to share with you some images inspired by village fetes! Tonight Ballad of Magazine is hosting a village fete to raise funds for Haiti. Little Monarch will be there with quirky regal inspired jewellery. If you are in London I do think you should pop by. There is going to be music, burlesque dancing, fortune tellers and cake!

I think Sleigh Bells are my new favourite band. She is adorable and he is a dreamboat.

Their music reminds me alot of The Kills but with a more electrpop vibe to it. They haven't actually officially released anything but there are a few live recordings on youtube. I have been listening to Ring Ring on repeat whilst i type this.

I am so happy because not only do I get to see them play alongside Pixies and Pavement at Primavera Sound in Barcelona but they are also doing a small gig in London in March which I will hopefully go along to.

While my cat happily snoozes at the foot of my bed I am wide awake at 6am on a Saturday morning with a cup of coffee and my laptop. I wish I was asleep. At least being awake early means i get to catch up on reading blogs.

Can I thrift my way through the USA?

As some of you may know, I am originally from New Zealand but have been living and working in the UK for the past 2 years. I have now come to the sad realisation that London is a city you cannot live in without a job. Now that my working visa has expired and I am now only on a visitors visa I have to start thinking about making my way back to my homeland.

I am experiencing loads of different feelings about having to uproot my life and a lot of them have to do with fear. I am REALLY worried about making the shift from a city in the middle of everything to a small town isolated from everything. I am scared of having to start from scratch. Scared of what I am going to do. But most of all I am scared to say goodbye to my friends, who are the most amazing people I have met whilst over here.

To help ease myself back into the NZ way of life I thought I would travel back via the USA and take a nice little holiday. I have no idea at all about where I want to go or what I want to do.

THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN. I thought it would be a great way to start planning my trip if I chose where I would visit based on my readers locations. I know a great deal of you are from the states and what better way to get to know you then to come and visit! Be it just for a coffee, a gig, or a few nights on your couch.

I am wanting to visit towns with the most amazing thrift stores, car boot sales, markets and cafes. Please start your recommendations NOW

A film worth watching

So who likes the look of this debut film by Tom Ford?!?! Colin Firth is looking very dapper indeed. Julianne Moore is stunning - as always.

If you havent seen the trailer I suggest you do.

It looks so beautiful and fabulous and I do hope Mr Ford continues in this line of work for many films to come. It suits him.

Yesterday I reached 100 followers! I cannot actually believe that there are now 100 people who have signed up to follow the little monarch blog. Its incredible.

Ella and I had a little party to celebrate.

We had balloons.

and good reading material.

I dug deep into my wardrobe and found this special little dress.

There was tea. of course.

and cake served on my favourite plates.

at one point all the fun got the better of me.

and then we called it a day and had a cat nap.

I am sorry the images are of poor quality. my camera is basically dead and really does not like taking photos so I had to edit them quite a bit to make them look half decent.

why did you start your blog please. I started blogging nearly a year ago. My original intention was to get myself in the habit of writing daily, with accountability from the readers. But now I continue putting so much energy into Squarectomy because I really value the community of it all, and I want to grow the site into a platform to launch other great blog writers.

This year I have decided to do a list of 50 small things to achieve. I did this back in 2007 and it really made me experience things I usually wouldn't leave time to do. What are everyone else's resolutions for the new year/decade?

On Saturday 14th February 1900 a party of schoolgirls from Appleyard College picknicked at Hanging Rock, near Mt. Macedon in the State of Victoria. During the afternoon several members of the party disappeared without a trace …

This is a 1975 Australian film set in the 1900s which I remember watching short clips of in High School English. I totally forgot about it until I started searching for pictures of 'girls in white dresses' and images from the film kept popping up in my search results. The film stills look amaaaazing and very Virgin Suicides-esque so I had to share them.

Woah, now, that's a little personal. Let's just say D. Vo.

2. Do you have any nicknames you care to share?

Not really. But when I get my Master's in Library Science, I will order everyone to call me "Master Vo."
3. How old are you? When is your birthday?!

I turned 24 on November 26.
4. and how tall are you?

4'10". You're breaking all the illusions that the Internet will allow me here with all these probing questions.
5. And your blog. What do you blog about and how can we read it?

My blog is called "Darling Darling" - http://recycleddarling.blogspot.com. I blog about anything that suits my fancy on that particular day, whether it's what I wore, something that irked me, something that pleased me, something that has been keeping me happy, etc. Some running themes are outfits/fashion, books, music, and photography.

6. How long have you been blogging for?

Almost a year now! A year in January, I believe. Boy, time sure does fly when you're typing nonsense and surfing the Internet a lot. 7. What was the last book you read. Would you recommend it? Are you someone that must finish every book you start or do you toss it aside if its not thrilling enough by the 3rd page?

The last book I read was Youth in Revolt by C. D. Payne and I hold it so very dear to my heart. It's 499 pages of coming-of-age bliss and sardonic humor; it's on my to-reread list this holiday break so yes, please do read it if you get the chance (keep in mind that 499 pages has to fit into this "chance" instance, however daunting or un-daunting you may or may not find that).

8. Where do you live? Where you born there?

Born and raised in Northern California.

9. I joined the local gym after work the other week. It is FUN. Do you work out at gyms?

No, I don't but I really should do. I tried having some type of exercise schedule in which I did sit-ups everyday but that quickly fell apart out of sheer laziness. I also used to bike a lot and skate some but now they are both on the rarest of occasions. I hope to get them back into my daily life soon.

10. Can you please describe yourself using one word . E.g . hot.Geeky.fat.thin.loud.hungry...you get the idea?

Hungry.

11. Have you met many of your blogging friends in real life?

I have. Four of 'em, in fact and they are all lovely ladies [Yvonne of Emy Augustus , Corrie of Lady Lunacy, Diana of our.city.lights , and Erin of calivintage ; that's in chronological order]. Well, I've hung out with these bloggers but I've been to two group "meet-ups," in which I met several more but didn't get the chance to really speak to them. My shyness gets in the way of a lot of things.

12. Do you smoke? If so what do you prefer?

Not really. It's usually just social situations, like parties and whatnot, and in that case, it's whatever the guy/girl next to me has

13. Have you always had short hair? Between the years of 2 and 15 I had hair past my shoulders but only because haircuts were maternally mandated. I chopped it off when I was about 16 and it was slightly above my shoulders and it felt soooo incredibly short. Since then, it's just been getting shorter and shorter.

14. I eat way too much icecream. Whats your favourite flavour?

Mint chocolate chip! Good job on making me hungry.

15. Your favourite winter accessory - Hat or scarf? Does beanie count? I have one trusty beanie that I wear about six days a week. But I also wear scarves a lot. Can I say both? Because I'd really really like to.

16. How many pairs of shoes do you own? Do you usually wear heels or flats?

Eesh, I'm not even going to try and count how many I have. My car is basically my shoe closet as I have this weird, compulsive need to have different pairs of shoes with me. It's just for those chance encounters where if someone suddently challenged me to a race, I have my sneakers right there with me, no problem. I'm usually a flats girl but I've been wearing heels a lot more.

17. Do you collect anything interesting?

Not really. I used to love getting those small bouncy balls you buy for a quarter in those vending machines and every time I'd get one, I'd put it in a box. It got about a quarter of the way full with bouncy balls and I wanted to fill it all up and then dump them from a two-story window onto the driveway or something. Of course, not onto a busy street or anything. Now that's just ridiculous.
18. Name 5 things/ideas/places etc that inspire you.

I can't pin down what inspires me. Everything and everybody does in some way. Not to get all existential but just being here does. Or to get all existential, just being does.
19. Do you have any irrational fears?

I have loads which i shall share another day. Needles? Is that irrational? Because I think being scared of a thin sharp instrument that can easily puncture your skin and inject all sorts of crap into your blood stream isn't entirely irrational. I know I have fears that are more irrational but I can't seem to think of them at the moment.

20. Are you superstitious?

No, I suppose not. I don't like to be jinxed, though. Like if I have an exam coming up and someone will say "Don't worry, you'll get an A!" I'll believe that they just jinxed me to an F.

21. Do you have any pets? Names?

Nope, sadly, no pets. I live with my parents and they don't like dogs or cats in the house, which is exactly what I want.

22. Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife? If so I hope they treat you well!

Boyf treats me super well.

23. Who takes all your outfit posts?

It's just me and the tripod.
24. What advice would you give to other bloggers?

Post what you like, not what you think other people will like. That old "be yourself" adage will really take you far.

26. Favourite thing to do on your day off?

On an ideal day where I get to do everything I want, I'd read; bike, skate, or walk for an extended amount of time; go to the library; hang out with my boyfriend; and hit up the thrift shops.

27. Last holiday you took? When are you taking another one?! I went to New York in July, which was pretty much spectacular. I'm not sure when my next one is going to be. Hopefully soon.
